[linux] et-starter, pulseaudio, Ctrl+3=Esc, xinit 08 Sep 2012 03:11 #45908

So some time ago I wrote a startup script for et, once I decided to rewrite it in Python of hope that it will be shorter and easier to maintain.

It did not work quite as originally planned.

But it is et-starter version 1.04
[half script, half procedural]

features:
- auto found paths for libSDL, enemy-territory, et-sdl-sound and executable
- auto shutdown pulseaudio when et is running, you need this when you using ALSA(or maybe OSS too)
- possibility to run et in other Virtual console(eg. :1.0 aka Ctrl+Alt+F8)
- workaround for Ctrl+3=Esc bug
- redirect output to file
- check for guid when you using pulseaudio

This allows to run et and teamspeak at same time.

:)
ET could really benefit from a PPA that install&configure this stuff.
I once gave up linux+ET because i was unable to make the sound work. Fuck ALSA...

This is not fault of ALSA.

When et was released nobody even heard of Pulseaudio, so et got only OSS support.
et-sdl-sound added support for other sound subsystems via SDL library, so actually it does not matter what sound subsystem you are using.

I wrote this script to solve a few problems and did not have to fix it in the future, I'm a bit lazy ^^

@oberguru "Step 6: There is not such a convenient program for Linux, such as the ET-Minimizer"

whaaaat? We have Virtual consoles for that, you can run 5+ copies of et same time.

if someone is using archlinux mod the PKGBUILD of the enemy-territory package adding options=(!strip) to make the damn sound work fine
